InDesign Course: IntroductionThis on-line course teaches you the basics of Adobe InDesign CS, a professional desktop publishing application which enables you to implement the design and the lay-out of many different kinds of publications. You acquire an understanding of how InDesign functions by working your way through the 4 parts this course. Parts 1 to 3 offer you a coherent set of instructions and demonstrations, which you are to carry out in the InDesign program. Part 4 of this course aims at giving you an understanding of the place of InDesign in Electronic PrePress (EPP) as a part of the modern publishing practice at Academic Press Leiden and elsewhere. To follow the course, you need to have access to a PC provided with an internet connection and, evidently, an installed version of InDesign CS. These conditions are met in the computer labs of the Leiden Arts faculty (Lipsius building). NB: To have access to InDesign you must be a registered student of one of the relevant courses offered by the Department of Book and Digital Media Studies or Boek, boekhandel en uitgeverij. The most effective way of following this course is by having a running version of InDesign alongside this text, so that you can immediately carry out the instructions that you come across. To be able to see this text and the InDesign window at the same time, resize both windows, so that they both cover about half of your screen. Use the scaling box bottom right to resize windows and move them by dragging them by the title bar. More practical information on how to use your internet-browser can be found in the section on hypertext skills
If you have lost your orientation during one of the following sections, remember that you can always return to this introductory page by clicking on the logo that you see at the upper and lower left corner of each page. Also remember that, if you come across an unfamiliar terms, you can turn to the index for help.
